Gelflex-EB: The Most Sustainable CI Flexographic Printing

Im Rangwalla, Market Development Manager, Energy Sciences Inc (ESI); Carles Rodriquez Nieto, VP, Comexi North America

Presentation Details
Central Impression (CI) flexographic ink technology has been commercialized to permit wet trapping without interstation or end-of-press hot air drying. This ink technology uses electron beam-initiated free radical polymerization to achieve cure. Wet trapping is obtained by an organo-jellification mechanism using Hansen Solubility Parameters (HSP). This patented printing process and ink technology was developed more than five years ago and is stable for high-speed (more than 1,300 fpm) food package printing. It provides high-resolution printing up to 70 lcm with the lowest carbon footprint compared to existing solvent and water-based CI flexographic ink technology. Principles of the ink technology and process will be discussed, along with sample print results, food law compliance and environmental benefits of the EB curing process.
